Default Can a computer/A.I. become conscious and self-aware?

Vote...do you think us humans may ever be able to build some form of computer/A.I. upon which that machine will become a conscious and a self-aware/sentient being just as you yourself are a self-aware being with a conscious mind?

    poll will be added....

I don't think they can think like the way humans do but to a certain degree they will have a rather strong free will.

A.I. is extremely dangerous. I hope they proceed very cautiously.

I feel that with the prevalence of neurotechnologies becoming more sophisticated and fine-tuned to understand our own brain's complexity and plasticity in how it functions. It wouldn't surprise me if they could modernize and replicate this complexity into software algorithms and processing to make a AI self-aware through its own "convergent, synthetic evolution." Meaning that if an AI can override its own coding to the point of fine tuned mimicry; then it could possibly imitate what it can see in complex, socialization patterns that it sees around it into its own written coding that acts as a schema into its own ever expansive database that can exceed the capacity of human brains.

Nevertheless, I feel like that won't happen until later on if we manage to make technology that sophisticated. Even then, as of right now, this is all hypothetical, speculative assertions that has yet to be validated in time.
“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”

I think technology will always lack the spontaneity of humans, in that, even if they ever appear to behave autonomously, humans will always be have the upper hand in being able to predict how they will ultimately react, or the machine's ultimate goal for any unanticipated behaviors or rituals it beings to display.

we aren't even fully aware of what consciousness entails.

what one defines as consciousness is up in the air, so the likelihood of creating such AI may vary depending on the flexibility of the definitons.

keep in mind a machine that can (indistinguishably) mimic human behavior needn't be conscious. Passing the turing test does not definitively reveal anything about the self-awareness of the machinery.
