Most of all, I think we are indifferent toward one another if anything. As for a separate or united Belgium, the older I get the less I care. I used to think it would be better for us to be part of the Netherlands as a naive teen and maybe young adult, but it's not easy to accomplish. Their state identity was forged through their history as the Dutch Republic for more than four centuries and that state culture is different from ours. We get along as individuals but if unified in a state, there will be differences comparable to Italy North vs South or Germany West vs East.
Also, what to do with Brussels? Francophones would want the long around the Brussels Capital Region. Reason they are somewhat pushing for it nowadays is because of the post-Belgium scenario. Only reason they care, because it would be a bureaucratic nightmare to have to deal with Flanders to get things done and vice versa.

Historically I do think the separation of the historical Netherlands (Low Countries) was a missed chance for our potential. The Belgian Revolution was another missed opportunity, but the short-lived Kingdom of the United Netherlands didn't need much to collapse (just one revolutionary period as swept across Europe that year).

Traditionally one key date is put forth here. 1585. The Fall of Antwerp to the Spanish Hapsburg forces. Some argue it shifted the epicentre of the Dutch culture to Amsterdam and over the years would result in us not considering ourselves Dutch today.

It's alright. Belgium is not a bad country. I call myself ethnically Belgian nowadays. Walloons have the same state culture as us and I'm often surprised they look at life in a similar way.
