Crimean Tatar deportation commemoration banned in Ankara...
On the afternoon of May 13, an annual mourning rally to commemorate the victims of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people on May 18, 1944, was to be held in Ankara. However, yesterday May 11, the Crimean Tatar organization of Turkey was reported that the authorities banned the event.
Following the Russian annexation of the Crimea and the subsequent ban of any events dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Deportation, the Crimean Tatar Organizations' Platform in Turkey has annually held a mourning rally on Anadolu Square in Ankara for three last years, gathering thousands of people.
The cancellation of the event on May 13 was justified by the state of emergency introduced throughout Turkey. Representatives of the Platform met with the Ankara City Council, aiming to persuade the authorities to make an exception, but it did not bring any positive results.
However, today, May 12, representatives of the Crimean Tatar Association of Culture and Mutual Assistance confirmed that the Mayor's office had given permission to hold a mourning rally.
