just to answer to someone, the Vinland map has been proven to be a fake. although the pergamen was actually period correct , the ink was proven to be written in the 1800's .
other note:
discovery is the geographical (odeporical)equivalent of an historical source. Just like history is made on documents and sources the history of geographical discoveries (odeporic experiences) must be the same way.what is discovered, to be such must appear in some kind of document (geographical map ) .
given this information we can only confirm the date of 1492 by Cristoforo Colombo. (give a look at his notes they are interesting. also by the third voyage you can tell he doubts those are the indies. however never explicitely says such. the thing is his "contract" of capitan with the spanish crown specified his duty to discover the indies...Colombo knew that they were already trying to push him out, given the importance of his discovery, and tried to prevent any occasion of possible controversy). imagine being sent to discover one thing and you say you discovered something else.
