How come Central Europeans look somewhat closer to Northern than Southern Europeans?

Modern-day French people have a lot of ancestry from Iberia and Italy in particular, but if you look at ethnic French people with little or no foreign ancestry, most don't look especially pigmented or Med at all (at least North of the Auvergne, at any rate).

Here I will disagree, cause considering French portraits of previous centuries, they looked nearly the same as today, a d most of them more like southern than northern European,and I am not even talking about southern French, but people from Paris etc

They look closer to the French more than anyone else, so neither especially Northern nor especially Southern. (Oh, Bloody, if you read this, just LOL at the idea that these are much blonder and fairer than Brits).

They are predominantly alpine in that video (I can pass quite unnoticed there), but to be honest that video was shot in the summer, the light isn't that good and many are tanned. On other hand there are also Austrians/Southernmost Germans who have a higher rate of blonde people. Blonde hair and facial features more typically northern European much depend of course on how strong the Germanic admixture is, which clearly comes from northern Europe (this is also true for Brits who have a good amount of Germanic DNA).

Hungarians look closer to Swedes than to Greeks. They are very Germanic influenced, along with Slavic.

Hungarians have a huge mixture of schwab population and sometimes it cleary shows. I am Hungarian growing up in Scandinavia I can see that Norwegians stand closer to the Hungarians than the sweeds. But the characteristics of Hungarians are still very different from any Scandinavian country. I would say that Hungarians have surprisingly high percentage of West - central european dna mixed with eastern and South Eastern European. Sometimes they can look Austrian or even Swiss or north Italian. Skintone is different and the height and body structure as well. Actually Croatians and Hungarians are quite close. But the germanic influences is just enough to lighten their avarage hair color to brown and not black haired
