But they assimilated Balkanites who weren't that genetically different from them. And I doubt that Serbs are more Slavic than native, to me their phenotypes are very Balkan. The most Slavic place in Serbia is north-western Vojvodina, which is on par with Slavonia in terms of Slavicness.

If Serbs aren't dark then Bulgarians aren't either. Anyway, I phrased my original question wrong. It should have been more like: Why are Serbs and Bulgarians not so Central European genetically even though both countries were settled by Celts in the Antiquity?

You should make a DNA test, it would be interesting

Dark traits are dominant, so hypotetically if you mix 30 fair people with 10 dark, result will be pred. dark (but will carry genes for both). They are obviously mix of both, but by YDNA and main ancestral component Slavic seem to be no.1
I don't agree about Vojvodina Serbs, because they are genetically one of more southern shifted Serbs. In Vojvodina live hundreds tousands of Hungarians, in the past also did Germans, Croats, SLovaks, Rusyns, Romanians.....it was one of most ethnically mixed regions in Europe. It even had one French speaking village in the past

Bulgarians assimilated greeks, serbs assimilated albanians. Serbs have lots of albanian surnames that have been slavicized. Most famous one is Djokovic, from he albanian first name Gjok which means chest in direct translation.

Whoah, so Vojvodina Serbs are one of the most southern shifted Serbs? That's very unexpected. How come? Was it settled by southern Serbs at some point?

Btw there are still Slovaks in Vojvodina.

Yes, I will make a DNA test in the future. It would be interesting because I am a full-blooded Southern Romanian.
