I once spotted 2 young Gypsy beggars on the town square of a Bosnian town and got a great idea. I said I would give 10KM (5 Euro) to the winner if they fought each other with fists until one of them collapsed. You can imagine how it went.

I'd rather donate to the homeless shelter or soup kitchen than give money to beggars. A few of them have homes and are on benefits and, thanks to begging, do pretty well. Some beggars are junkies and by giving to them, you are basically supporting the drugs trade, and some are alcoholics who will be violently drunk after they've blown your cash on the cheapest booze they can find. Also, it can encourage potential aggressive and offensive beggars to hassle passers by for cash.

Give to the charity, it's money much better spent.

Many beggars are drug addicts, no amount of social consciousness could save them. I still give beggars money, but many have only themselves to blame.

I prefer to buy them some water or food rather than give them money, you dont know if theyre going to spend it on drugs or alcohol. Its really sad seeing them.
