Teacher Finds Out He’s Related To 9000-Year-Old Skeleton
Known As “Cheddar Man”
9000 years ago, a 23-year-old hunter was laid to rest in a limestone cave after he suffered a killing blow to the face.
This cave presently resides in a village in Somerset, south-west England, named Cheddar,
(famous for making Cheddar cheese)
giving the skeleton the name “Cheddar Man”.
Scientists decided to extract the skeleton’s mitochondrial DNA from a tooth cavity
and after sampling DNA from 20 families that had lived the longest in the area,
they found a direct descendant from the 9000-year-old Cheddar Man.
Bridging 90 centuries and 300 generations, 42-year-old history teacher, Adrian Targett,
received unexpected fame for being the direct descendant of Britain’s oldest complete skeleton.
Coincidentally, Targett lives only half a mile from the burial site.
He mentions, “I’ve been in the cave a few times, but I never realized it was home.”
Cheddar Man is now on display at the National History Museum in London, England.
Can you imagine finding out a 9000-year-old skeleton was your many, many-greats grandfather?
