I've recently mentioned 'the more North you go, the more Gypsies', but I'm not sure after looking up articles about the different mafias in Italy. During the '90s the Venetian mafia was still powerful and their methods more violent than their Southern Italian counterparts. Their membership consists mainly of people of general Italian and Venetian origins. Nowadays they've been severely weakened.

Recently in the news I read about a large operation versus the 'Ndrŕngheta (the Calabrese mafia), whom I believe is currently the strongest criminal organisation active in Italy.

I guess they use different criminals who aren't part of their organisation to do their dirty work from time to time.

Because recently sicilian mafia start to work withh africans gang.
I think that the mafia had been exclusively for native Italians or at least Europeans back in the early 20th century. Today, they soften their stance on foreigners by allowing them into the organization for reasons unknown.

We still don't know how many they exactly are. But there is an increasing number of foreigners in the Mafia clans. Often local mobs engage foreigners, or foreign mafias ally themselves with local mafia clans.

The clans of the Romani/Sinti origins are not a surprise. Much of it is made up of Romani/Sinti who settled many centuries ago in Italy, and they have always operated to the limits of legality. Then the recent migration of Romani/Sinti from the Balkans has enlarged their ranks. Even if the most famous Romani/Sinti clan remains the Casamonica, there are certainly Romani/Sinti elements in the Calabrian 'ndrŕngheta and the Neapolitan Camorra. One of the Calabrian clans is called "Rango-Zingari", Zingari means Gypsies in Italy.

In 2014 for the first time 15 Romanians were sentenced for mafia crimes, as there was a war in Italy between Romanian and Albanian clans. But there are also other foreign mafias operating in Italy, often made up of recent migrants. And if they work in Italy, it's obvious that they are allied with the traditional mafias.

It's not enough to read wikipedia. That was initially a criminal gang, not a mafia. They were active between north-east Italy and former Jugoslavia. At some point they made a leap of quality because they met the many mafiosi that had been sent in confinement in northern Italy, a "number of high-ranking members of the Sicilian Mafia were sent in solitary confinement in various provincial towns in the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions". In fact, how its members have been arrested, that criminal band has disappeared. To send the mafiosi in solitary confinement in north Italy was one of big mistakes that our government did in the 1960s.

The word mafia is Arabic of origin and the collecting of pizzo is similar extortion to collecting jizya from non-muslims.
