The two friends, of Millom, were travelling in a Toyota Yaris which was in a crash with a Ford Transit Connect van on the A595 near the village of Bootle at 8pm.

A third 18-year-old girl, who was in the back seat of the van is fighting for life in hospital.

The driver of the van, 51, is in a serious but stable condition.

Student Skye’s devastated family said they would miss her “daily hugs”.

In a heart-wrenching tribute, the family said: “Skye was a popular, kind, caring girl who raised money for various charities.

“She made the most of her 18 years, embracing every opportunity that came her way.”
