    Ostrów Lednicki was an Early Medieval fortified town located on an island on the Lednica Lake in Poland.

    According to dendrochronology, construction of a small stronghold began around year 885. In the 900s the town was vastly expanded. In 963-964 two large wooden bridges (440 meters long and 170 meters long), connecting the island with the mainland, were built. In 966 the ruler of Poland - Mieszko I - adopted Christianity. His baptism ceremony very likely took place in Ostrów Lednicki. The stronghold continued to flourish until 1038 or 1039, when it was destroyed by the invading Czech forces under Bretislav I of Bohemia. After that blow, the settlement recovered and the island continued to be inhabited until the 14th century, but the stronghold never regained its former importance (that was due to the fact that the political center of the Polish Kingdom was moved from Wielkopolska to the south, to Cracow).
