Just wanted to post this graphic I spent a while doing a few days ago. Basically, the original R haplogroup evolved in Siberia, but its ancestors came from Southeast and South Asia. And modern consensus is that the R1a (Indo-Europeans) and R1b ("native" Europeans) haplogroups evolved and moved out of this area as well (after which some of R1a migrated into South Asia). The complexity comes with the minor haplogroup R2 which is found in highest concentrations in Northern India. I'm not entirely sure about its origin area.
