Why are people in California so tall?

This came out of the blue. I am visiting California. Height is about 172. Most of the men who I see are at least an inch taller than me. I feel short here. The only place where I feel average is Chinatown. This is really odd to me. I live in Toronto, Canada. I am not used to feeling short like this. This only happens when I come to California.

With regard to specific states, Americans reporting German ancestry are the most numerous in California, followed by Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and Texas. That kinda surprised me.

Areas with more old stock White NW Euro and Black ancestry are just taller.

The South and the Midwest have by far the most of those types. FME though I didn't think people in Kansas City were all that crazy tall, nor were people in the Midwest, but Southerners on the whole are quite tall. I'd say the average male there is at least around 5'11 and it wasn't uncommon to bump into guys who are 6'4 and above, just a towering height.

My fiance is biracial, her dad's side is Black from the South. Her mom is Northern Euro from the Midwest. Nearly all the males in her family are above 6 feet. The females 5'7 and above. She's 5'8.

My ex-gf was a White southerner, she was about 5'8 too, and although the females weren't that tall in her family, maybe average about 5'5. The men were pretty tall, her granddad was 6'5.

California's average is brought down by shorter Hispanic and Asian immigrants. Also, many of the Whites here are not necessarily of NW Euro descent, and on average arent as tall either. I'd say most white guys I bump into here are maybe 5'8 to 5'9. Whereas in the South, 5'11 easy.

Toronto has a lot of French and Southern Euros, not to mention Asians, Indians, etc.. All are shorter than Anglos and Nordics
