I think there is some truth to this among the European population in CA. Lots of tall and lanky people. Maybe diet plays into it.

Well at 172 he would be short pretty much anywhere, not just California.
I have personally experienced that Americans are quite shorter than I expected, but I was visiting the other coast, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. Everyone was usually up to my chin at best. Black guys were usually on the taller side.
