On wiki is nothing about their outside provenance.

But one test is only a probability, It needs confirmation.

Sir Patrick MacLellan of Bombie's estates were forfeited as a result of marauding through the lands of the Clan Douglas.[1] However James II of Scotland restored the estates when Sir William MacLellan, son of Sir Patrick captured the leader of a band of gypsies who had been terrorizing the district.[1] William carried the head of the brigand to the king on the point of his sword.[1] This story is one explanation for the MacLellan clan crest, however a Moors' head has also been considered as an allusion to the Crusades.[1]

    Another version of the story:

Sir William M'Clellan of Bombie was the nephew of the murdered Sir Patrick M'Clellan. At the request of King James II in 1488, Sir William gathered his followers and defeated "Black Morrow" of Ireland, whose band of marauders was terrorizing the neighborhood of Galloway and Kirkcudbright. Sir William carried the head of Black Morrow on the end of his sword to King James to prove the success of the mission, and bade the King "Think On!" after he had forgotten his proclamation to award the Barony of Kirkcudbright to the M'Lellans. William M'Clellan was Knighted, the borough of Kirkcudbright was made Royal Burgh, and Sir William its first Provost.
The motto of the MacLellan Clan has forever more been "Think On!"

Looks legit. This same lineage founded several royal dynasties: Rurikids, Gedimids, Jagelloonians etc. It obviously belonged to group of hardcore Warriors; that it also founded a small House in Scotland sounds very reasonable with this backstory.

According to McClellan DNA Project only McClellands of Bombie belong to this haplogroup. Which again to me shows that they know what they are doing

    Other MacLellans[edit]
There are concentrations of MacLellans found in the Western Isles (especially in Eriskay and South Uist) and around Mallaig and Arisaig. The surname of the MacLellans of North Uist is represented in Scottish Gaelic as MacGilleFhialain; these MacLellans were also known in Gaelic as Clann Iain Mhoir.
