The Gulf region has never been an intellectual center. 100 years ago before the oil wealth, most people were living a semi-nomadic tribal lifestyle.

The intellectual traditions of the Islamic world are mainly derived from the contributions of Persian, Levantine and Egyptian civilizations.

Saudia has one of the old magnificent civilizations, they are like every other nation bright civilization then it decays ( they aren't as strong as the levantine or the egyptian old civilizations but it's very important)

Wasn't this built by the Nabateans? They were quite civilized, but go further South and its a different story I'm afraid.

Yes they do have some civilization, but their intellectual culture was very undeveloped. Nowhere near the sophistication of the older civilizations that were absorbed by the Islamic world.

I feel bad for them, living in perhaps a wealthy but very controlled society comes with its disadvantages, similar to Iran but I think Iranians are a bit different culturally, the taste for women however might be at same level

No way man. Persians are from different civilization. Here are a lot of Iranians in Tbilisi, much more than Saudis, but they do not make problems. Despite the regime Iranians are more open minded. Woman do not wear burka, most of them change their clothing to normal one when they go out from Iran and look normal European. Some chikas are really really hot. I think Iranians are one of the least religious people in the world, at least the ones i see here.
