TENS OF THOUSANDS DEMONSTRATE FOR SZÉKELY AUTONOMY IN TRANSYLVANIA
The 10th of March is the Day of the Székely Freedom. The date has been chosen because this day in 1854 saw the execution of the memebers of the so-called “Makk conspiracy” that aimed to fight for freedom again after the failed Revolution of 1848.
On the annual demonstration, this year tens of thousands of the demonstrators came together for a protest march for the autonomy of Székely Land. The crowd, equipped with flags and billboard without any disorderly conduct, took the walk through the city of Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureş) in Transylvania, which has a substantial ethnic Hungarian community. They marched to the main square of Marosvásárhely, where the organizers and representatives gave speeches. Speakers included László Tőkés, Member of the European Parliament and chairman of the Szekler National Council. The speakers handed over the petition to the commissioned person of the government.
