Default Why does Yemen even exist

Next-door Saudi Arabia is a rich country, so I think their future would be much better as a part of Saudi Arabia, which, after all, has the same ethnic identity

Wouldn't a union be a better solution than millions of people suffering from malnutrition?

Because they feel different from their Bulgarian fellows, no matter if in fact they have zero difference

I don't think that any Yemeni, on the other hand, identifies as "non-Arab"

The answer to this is very simple

Yemen had a kingdom in the North from the 1600s onwards based on Zaidi-Shia rulers. They are the predecessors of the Houthi rebels today and was called the Mutawakil dynasty. This Monarchy ruled the mountains of North Yemen. The coast belonged to the Ottomans, until the British took them in the 1800s to form the protectorate of South Yemen/Aden

When ibn Saud was conquering Arabia, he tried to conquer Yemen...much of southern Saudi Arabia is historically part of Yemen (Asir region, Najran and Baha are all part of Yemen cultural sphere, and Najran had christians and jews well into the 20th century btw). He couldnt take more than what he took, and ofcourse he knew not to attack the Britich colonies of South Yemen, same way he didnt attack the British colonies in the trucial states (now Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, etc) Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. So ibn Saud signed a treaty with kingdom of Yemen in 1932 to mark their borders.

In the 1960s...The marxists were fighting the royalists in Yemen, and Saudi came on the side of the royalists (who we call Houthis today) while Egypt was on the side of the South Yemeni marxists (Gamal Abdel Nasser's pan-Arabism). Now there are no royalists or marxists, just tribal units and sects, all the fancy ideologies are dropped and we are reduced to the common denominator of race/tribe/sect.

Why Libya (twice the size of Egypt) and population of 5 millions is separate from Egypt?

Why Sudan (which is historically part of Egypt) took independence from Egypt?

every nation has its own right to be free even if they are poor.

I agree, but I repeat: what Is so different between a Yemeni and a Saudi

I respect all waadad has formulated and recognize that for historical reasons Yemen survived as separated from Saudi Arabia

But now, that things are different and too many people have died, I think it's time to think of a union

Al-saud don't know look at it like that.. they care about money and monarchy not about the suffering of other people (that's what I think).

plus a full union between saudia and yemen will make the houthi infiltrate to Saudia and do crimes there (as they are loyal to Iran).

Yemen was always a distinct region of Arabia (Sheba, Himyar, Arabia Felix, etc)...like Macedonia of Greece, its why I brought up FYROM.

Yemen in Arabic means "Right Side of.."

and Sham (Levant) means "Left Side of..."

    the "of" being Arabia proper
