The American Civil Liberties Union backpedaled Wednesday on tweeting a photo of a white baby holding a U.S. flag after users called it racist.
The seemingly harmless photo showed a blond-haired toddler in a “Free Speech - ACLU” onesie holding a U.S. flag and what appears to be a colorful toy dog. The tweet read, “This is the future that ACLU members want.”
But users quickly accused the ACLU of promoting white supremacy — a point the organization apparently agreed with.
“When your Twitter followers keep you in check and remind you that white supremacy is everywhere,” the ACLU responded, including a .gif of Kermit the Frog saying, “That’s a very good point.”
The ACLU clarified in another tweet that “[t]he future we want is babies in ACLU onesies.”
“For more cute ACLU babies, follow us on Instagram!” the organization said.
The ACLU’s Instagram account featured a picture of the same white baby smiling at the camera.
“Dissent is patriotic and don’t let your parents tell you otherwise,” the caption read.
Instagram users also accused that picture of perpetuating “white privilege.”
The ACLU describes itself as America’s “guardian of liberty,” working to “defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.”
The ACLU has undergone some soul-searching in the aftermath of the deadly protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, with some of its members questioning whether hate speech is worth protecting, the Associated Press reported. The organization has since announced that it will no longer defend hate groups that march with weapons, as some of those in Charlottesville did.
