I grew up as a Greek Orthodox Christian but embraced Buddhism as a practice and life altering experience about 10 years ago. The tenets, the simplicity, the daily meditation really appealed to me and changed my life.

The basics are the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.

    The Four Noble Truths are:

    1. Life is suffering (dukkha)

    2. The cause of all suffering is desire.

    3. Desire keeps us trapped in the world (samsarah) and in the cycle of reincarnation.

    4. One may achieve liberation (nirvana - liberation, lit. "not-burning") from suffering and rebirth by following the Eightfold Path.

    The Eightfold Path is:

Right Resolve: the giving up home and adopting the life of a religious mendicant in order to follow the path; this concept, states Harvey, aims at peaceful renunciation, into an environment of non-sensuality, non-ill-will (to loving kindness), away from cruelty (to compassion).[30] Such an environment aids contemplation of impermanence, suffering, and non-Self.[30]

Right Speech: no lying, no rude speech, no telling one person what another says about him, speaking that which leads to salvation;[23]

Right Conduct: no killing or injuring, no taking what is not given, no sexual acts.[23]

Right Livelihood: beg to feed, only possessing what is essential to sustain life;[23]

Right Effort: guard against sensual thoughts; this concept, states Harvey, aims at preventing unwholesome states that disrupt meditation.[30]

Right Mindfulness: never be absent minded, being conscious of what one is doing; this, states Harvey, encourages the mindfulness about impermanence of body, feeling and mind, as well as to experience the five aggregates (skandhas), the five hindrances, the four True Realities and seven factors of awakening.[30]
Right samadhi: practicing four stages of meditation (dhyāna) culminating into unification of the mind.

I was describing my general life outlook to a co-worker a few days back. He said "it sounds like you're a Buddhist" I never considered it that way, but when I explained the values to my father who is a Christian he thought they were very Christlike.

most hippies are buddhists nowadays, i dont know if you are buddhist, but i knew from teenager years some hippies/anarchos etc. who didnt like christianity, smoked drugs, were promiscous etc. and now write on their profile they are buddhists. real buddhists like zhaoyun or the dalai lama wouldnt approve of so called "western buddhists" just like with "western hindus" like @Ottar
