Dutch Right-wing politician and controversial anti-Islam campaigner Geert Wilders has been refused entry to the United Kingdom despite being invited to visit by a member of the House of Lords, the British parliament's upper chamber.

Mr Wilders, who was due to go to London this Thursday, received a letter today, 10 February, from the British ambassador to the Netherlands telling him that he was not welcome, reportedly because his visit would constitute a threat to public order.

Mr Wilders responded to the decision in fighting mood, telling Dutch media that he still intended to travel to London:

"I'll see what happens at the border. Let them put me in handcuffs."

Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen's response was also firm. He contacted his UK counterpart, David Miliband, by telephone and voiced his dissatisfaction that a member of the Dutch parliament - Geert Wilders is in fact also the leader of a political grouping, the Freedom Party - has been prohibited from entering a fellow European Union member state (Continues)

I'm not a fan of Wilders, but denying him the entry to UK seems absurd to me...

I thought the EU was a common passport zone. As in going from lets say France to England was like crossing from Indiana into Ohio. Just drive through, no custom or passport checks.

Not exactly, because the UK does not belong to the Schengen Agreement states.

'Let them arrest me': Dutch MP vows to defy Home Office ban and fly to Britain to show anti-Islam film

A right-wing Dutch politician who has been banned from Britain said today he planned to defy the authorities and fly to the UK, stating 'Let them put me in handcuffs'. Geert Wilders had been invited by the UK Independence Party peer Lord Pearson to show his anti-Islam film 'Fitna' and hold a Q&A session in Parliament tomorrow.

Wilders has been detained after arriving at Heathrow, and is apparently going to be deported.

The right-wing Dutch politician banned from visiting the UK over his anti-Islam views has been refused entry after arriving at Heathrow airport this afternoon.

Geert Wilders was presented with a letter that refused him entry to Britain after arriving at immigration.

After leaving the aircraft, Mr Wilders was taken into a side room to be interviewed, witnesses said.

Mr Wilders was invited to Westminster to show his 17-minute film Fitna, which criticises the Koran as a 'fascist book', by a member of the House of Lords.

I'm looking on the bright side with this - today, he has received so much media attention here in the UK, that those who have never heard of him are now enlightened and are questioning the Home Secretary's antics.

Not only that, but his profile has risen exponentially!

Bloody cowards, it is surely so much easier and safer to get tough with a Western politician rather than the blood-thirsty savages followers of the crazy prophet in their midst!

Agreed; overall, this could actually be beneficial for Wilders' cause and image. The fact that the Dutch Government, as well as a number of Lords and other high-profile British officials, have openly backed Wilders and condemned the ban is a PR victory. Hopefully the UK will be humiliated, now that its hypocrisy and opposition to free speech has been demonstrated to the public.
