I lived in Norrbotten County so I suppose it was a more notable Saami population, or generally being closer to the core of the Saami world.

Like cities like Kiruna which I would say close to half of the population has some ties to Saami people, or maybe it just seemed so.

Like I wrote; their relationship is neutral (not negative at all). Of course I have't lived in Lappland, but I have visited there several times. Yep, I think that's just how the majority of Finns thinks/feels. In reality Finns and Samis will not meet very often. They someway lives side by side in peace (Saamis northern) but connections between them are really quite limited. I guess it has been so long time.

Saamis language is quite far from Finnish. Estonia, Karelia, Livonia, Ingria languages are clearly closer to Finnish.

OK. I thought the relationship between Sami and Finns was like that of Dutch and Germans.

Better avoid some useless endless discussion about Saamis & Finns genes (if some troll would like to step in)? So I'll concentrate only to mental side. The answer is: Simply no. Finns do not feel that kind of mental connection with Saamis. Probable atleast partly so as Saamis culture is so different. Dutch and Germans cultures?...well you know.
