South Korea is not as rich and prosperous as you think. It has gdp per capita similar to that of country like Italy or Spain and it was shithole just few dozens years ago, thus did not accumulate any significant wealth. And neither South Korea nor anybody else (if that matters) can afford "fixing" North Korea. SK wants to maintain status quo with peaceful Northern neighbour which is slowly trasnforming into "better" country. Nobody but american wanmongers and patriotuc idiots want war and following humanitarian crisis.

South Korea's GDP is roughly comparable to Southern Euro countries but it's primarily because it just arrived to first world status back in the 90s. Industry wise it's a much more important industrial power than most Euro countries, even those with a higher GDP per capita. Germany is probably the only Euro country that is more productive/

If USA wants to invade Korea it does not need Europe, but China, South Korea, Japan and maybe Russia. Obviously a war with North Korea would be very problematic. They would no doubt fight like hell and the offense would have to be very very large operation. I sort of feel that it would be better to act now than to wait for NorthKorea to develop even more devastating weapons systems. Of course there is that slight possibility that the situation could resolve on it's own, but right now it looks that the nation is in very deep psykosis, and needs intervention.

You are quite sensible, the problem is not really about democracy or dictatorship, it is about NK might be a future source of cheap nuclear weapons. Lawless and cruel one individual in charge of not only a country as large as half of England also a working stockpiles will surely encourage more individuals like him to pursue the so called pawn in negotiation. People like these having no economy to worry but dying later or sooner will not exactly exploit nuclear weapons as pawn of talks, real weapons instead.

As much as I dislike the North Korean regime in regards to how it deals with its people, I don't want to see another nation become a 21st century colony for the United States' government.

Thing tho is that North Korea is a major cause for US political and military presence in East Asia. Without North Korea you'd have a much stronger, unified East Asia. Right now, South Korea and Japan have to rely on US presence to ensure their safety against North Korea, and partly against China too. A unified Korea would be very close to at least "a regional superpower" economically and militarily. Meaning that it would be strong enough state to ward of any Chinese threat on their own, without outside help. And of course China right now is a changed state and doesn't really ward any immediate thread to it's neighbours.
