This is very common in Greek-Canadian weddings. I think it's because many Greek-Canadians try and hold onto customs from 100(?) years ago, and those carry on through generations in Canada. However, these traditions do not happen in Greece. It would be considered pretty backwards tbh, even offensive.

With a little research in Google I found out what exactly this dance is. It was never common in Greece proper, not even among anatolian Greeks, it says that it's a Greek Cypriot dance, and that's why most of Greeks proper ignore it, not because they consider it offensive or backward etc

In Canada or America, all Greeks equally adopt customs and traditions from all parts of Greek nation, but this doesn't happen here in Greece

For example in my island you will listen to kantades traditional music in weddings, but never traditional music of Pontiac Greeks from caucasus, and I guess the same goes vice-versa.

Unavoidably, there is a part of Greece (nearly half of the population) mostly related to South Europe, and the other half is divided between those who are related to Balkans and those related to middle east, and this divisions are not strictly regional (even though geography plays a role) but class as well

No offense, this doesn't make any of these Greeks less Greek (even though yes, Greece today has populations which I have no idea why to call Greeks, like caramanides, cappadokians etc)

BTW in another forum that I participate, an Italian user said that "Italian Americans are less European than Argentinian Italians", and that for some reason reminds me of Greek Americans and Canadians

Wrong many Greek proper do this today

You can find everywhere in Mainland Greece Skyladika and Tavernas where this happens
In particular in North Greece in Thessaloniki or Kavala

First of all I live in Greece and when I saw this thread I felt confused like all Greeks did here, because we have never seen it anywhere, then I did my research and everywhere it writes "it's a Cypriot dance". This doesn't make Cypriots less Greeks, but unavoidably they have some middle eastern influence that Greeks proper lack, the way eastern Russians have some extra uralic influence that western Russians lack, or Andalusians have extra moorish influence that rest of Spain lack. All nations have regional differences

And another reason that Greek Americans are less European than Greeks proper is that they compose characterestics from specific eastern populations (like pontians) which Greeks proper don't have. Who the hell in Greece knows "money dance"? Noone. Who in USA knows money dance: all Greek Americans

Nevertheless I can't do something to change the fact that we don't share it
