I guess it makes sense. 1) I am a Midwesterner from the Chicago area with both parents from the city proper
2) Most of my ancestry is German, Danish, Polish. You could get also into semantics in that part of my Polish is Belarusian...and I am 1/32 Ashkenazi as well (Ashkenazi side is independent of the Polish/Ruthenian side)

Don't know about other South Americans, but for Brazilians French are the stereotypical ''whites'', even more than Iberians. So the further you go from a French/Western European look less people will think you really look European. They will still consider the dude white if he is light skinned, but not many people will say he looks ''European''. Atlantid types are seen as the most stereotypical ''white''. So the stereotypical white here is basically a French/Light Iberian look.

Certain Balkanites/Greeks/Eastern Europeans would be guessed as non-European here.

There are many of Polish descent in eastern parts of the Midwest though, certainly much more so than Scandinavians. The Midwest is somewhat heterogeneous in terms of common ethnicities.

Americans = Euro mutts. They are a mix of so many European ethnicities that they aren't any of them.

Which explains why "White" is so popular in America as opposed to being a specific European ethnicity such as German, Irish, Russian,Italian,Greek and so forth.

Rather be a Euro Mutt than moderately mixed with an entirely different race.

White americans are basically an anglo-german mix, no? Standard white argentinian/brazilian/uruguayan is an iberian/italian mix. In Brazil it's northern italian input, not sure about Argentina or Uruguay.
