    Default What happened to Romans of Serbia?

    Sirmium, one of the Four Roman Capitals. Populated by 10 - 20.000 Roman Citizens in 550 A.D

    Sirmium, Singidunum, Naissus, Virminacum etc... Approximately 150.000 Latin speaking Roman Citizens lived in 5th century on that region.

    What happened to them?

    How is it possible that modern day Serbia was a Latin speaking country in 5th century while only 150 years later was predominantly Slavic?

    Is it true that Slavs killed them all?

    That area of the Balkans during the centuries was submerged by Goths, Huns, Slavs, Bulgars, Hungarians, Turks. Until at least Xth century there was a Romance speaking population in Pannonia (actual Hungary) which disappeared when the Hungarians arrived in the region. Romance languages disappeared from Serbia during the middle ages, remained only isolated pockets of Vlachs here and there.

    I am a Great fan of Roman cities, buildings and culture it pains me to see 1g of rock being collapsed or destroyed not to mention a people who were murdered by various nations.

    I've seen those barbarian ISIS destroying ancient cities in ME, I felt like someone is stabbing me with knife.

    I am passionate non-academic historian so It's all very precious to me.

    To me it looks a Romanized Celtic name, in facts Celts lived in that area of the Balkans since remote ages

    The Celtic root Dun or Dunon means "fort, fortress"

    Singidunum = Singi-dun or Sindi-dun = round fortress
    Noviodunum = New fortress = there were many Roman colonies with this name in the Roman Gallia
    Lugdunum = actual Lyon, France = Fortress of Lug (a Celtic god)

    ^ SIMOKKATES: Sclavos sive Getas hoc enim nomine antiquitis appellati sunt - Sclavs or Getae, because that was their name in the antiquity.

    Celts were simply a military arm of the Serb. GETI meant in Serbian 'It's yours'.
