You mean he could me Karamanli? Karamanlis lived in Karaman, Pontic Greeks lived in Trabzon. These provinces aren't close to each other. If he's Karamanli he would know it and would not claim to be Pontic Greek.

Pontians are a hit or miss most of the time

I wouldn't really either but I wouldn't question him if he identifies as Greek. Pontians are indigenous Anatolian which is why their closest population is often Armenian. They were merely just Hellenized.
