Police invite the public to bring their pistols, rifles and shotguns in exchange for $50 gift cards for use at any Food 4 Less.

Gift cards worth $100 will be given in exchange for firearms classified as assault weapons under state law.

Under California law, guns considered assault weapons include rifles such as AK or AR-15 series weapons or other rifles that employ a box magazine, along with such design features such as a pistol grip, flash suppressor or thumbhole stock.

California's assault weapons law also includes shotguns or semiautomatic pistols with certain prohibited features.

Kilmer said the exchange process will be simple.

The initiative is to fight crime, but combined with the current economic crisis food is a strong weapon. We can expect to see more programs like these springing up all over the U.S in the coming years. First thing I thought was, for $50 I'll give you a box and a half of ammo, because that's all $50 is worth with my firearms. You aren't even tempting me unless you go above $1000.00. And if you had half a brain you'd hold on to those firearms like your life depended on it, not give them up for food that'll feed a family of 4 for a day.

I actually believe that people should arm themselves and form militia's and learn how to grow food and live off the land as best they can and if law enforcement comes into disband them. Give 'em a Lexington.

It has to start somewhere.
