Wenn der Regen niederbraust,
Wenn der Sturm das Feld durchsaust,
Bleiben Mädchen oder Buben

Robert aber dachte : Nein !
Das muß draußen herrlich sein ! -
Und im Felde patschet er

Hui wie pfeift der Sturm und keucht,
Daß der Baum sich niederbeugt !

Seht ! Den Schirm erfaßt der Wind,
Und der Robert fliegt geschwind
Durch die Luft so hoch, so weit;
Niemand hört ihn, wenn er schreit.
An die Wolken stößt er schon,
Und der Hut fliegt auch davon.



Schirm und Robert fliegen dort
Durch die Wolken immerfort.
Und der Hut fliegt weit voran,
Stößt zuletzt am Himmel an.
Wo der Wind sie hingetragen,
Ja, das weiß kein Mensch zu sagen.

Ließ er sich nicht schneiden
Seine Nägel fast ein Jahr;
Kämmen ließ er sich nicht sein Haar.
Pfui! ruft da ein Jeder:
Garst'ger Struwwelpeter!

When I was at school in Germany in the mid-80's, I had to learn that song off by-heart. We even visited the Struwwelpeter-museum dedicated to Heinrich Hoffman on a school trip to Frankfurt.

If my memory doesn't betray me, Hoffman was a moralist who also wrote a tale to denounce racism and intolerance. Some white kids make fun of a black one because of his skin color. Saint Nicholas comes down to Earth to punish the naughty kids and throws them into an inkwell, so that they become even more black than the little African. It's die Geschichte von d'en schwarzen Buben (The story of the Black kids).

Ja genau. I remember we played Hoffmann's tales at school for Christmas. I played one of the kids who were making fun of the black kid. Actually I was disguised as a dog because I played a dog in another tale. So it means I was a racist dog, lol, and I finished in the inkwell.

I had these too.

I liked the story of Paulinchen the most because it's the only story with a girl. I used to cry because the cats cried when she burnt to death.

Whenever I was naughty my grandmother always reminded me of the things which happened to naughty children in Struwwelpeter and that I should get my act together and be nice.
