I think there is a reason why teenagers in past decades were more likely to go out: there was nothing fun to do at home. If you stayed in the house, you were either watching TV or playing a board game. It had nothing to do with their emotional growth or their wanting to be an adult.

Today, with the internet and smartphones, children and adults don't even need to leave the house or even call anyone to have fun. Movies, games, and even socialization is available at everyone's fingertips. Even as an adult, I find it easier to go onto the web to argue politics, or whatever, with people than to invite friends over and discuss it. And I'm sure the availability of pornography can substitute for a date for many - no cost involved, no risk of rejection, no reputation risk.

There might be a number of reasons for this trend. But I think the biggest one is the device I'm using to post this comment.
