In Portugal we first start by studying the Lusitanians usually, a pre-Celtic tribe that used to live in West Iberia in areas where a large portion of our territory is nowadays located. In 193 B.C. the Romans waged war against the Lusitanians. Viriato was the most important leader of the Lusitanian people that resisted the Roman expansion in the regions of western Hispania (as the territory was called back in the day) and is still an identitarian national hero in Portugal. After the Romanization we were invaded by the Suebi, Alans, Vandals and Visigoths and they formed several kingdoms in the peninsula. In the year of 711 the Moors invaded the peninsula and settled in where Portugal is located nowadays (in the majority of the areas not 300 years or even less, contrary to 700 years I hear most people talking about in here).

This is all taught kinda superficially in schools since the real Portuguese identity starts with the Treaty of Zamora (October 5, 1143) that recognized Portuguese independence from the Kingdom of León. From here on history is taught in more depth usually, when it is given birth to one of the most steady, homogeneous and consistent national identities in the world. In Europe there's no other like ours, you have to go to Korea or Japan to find a similar national identity.

Not Portuguese. The Portuguese nation origins and formation was 1000 years later and geographically north of the Douro river wich was never Lusitanian territory. It is not even known were Viriato was born, if it was in territory that corresponds to Portugal or Spain (a significant portion of Lusitanian territory was in Spain)
