Quebec's racism hearings will cost at least $900,000

QUEBEC — Quebec’s public consultation on systemic racism will cost at least $900,000 to taxpayers, La Presse Canadienne has learned.

The hearings, organized jointly by Quebec’s immigration department and human rights commission, is designed to identify racism and propose concrete solutions to eliminate it.

On Friday, the premier’s office confirmed that the regional consultation, as well as a large forum in November, will cost at least $900,000.

The project is being strongly contested by the opposition Parti Québécois and Coalition Avenir Québec, who believe that it will unfairly put Quebecers on trial. Both parties have demanded the hearings be cancelled.

For Couillard, it’s a different question.

“How much does racism and systemic discrimination cost to society?” he asked. “At a time when we need everybody to help advance Quebec, when we’re looking for people to participate in the workforce everywhere, how much does it cost us that people in this society feel excluded to the point of having difficulty finding a home or a job?” he told a combined meeting of the Ontario and Quebec cabinets on Friday.
