Getting Russian citizenship just because of very distant unknown Russian ancestor is totally impossible You'll rather get our citizenship like a Gypsy.
There exist some programs for repatriation of former compatriots but they are mainly based on their having a former Soviet citizenship, not on the Russian nationality, and the significant percentage of people passing this way are non-Russians. The only exception I know are small communities of Russian old believers, sometimes they move back to Russia, but it's an exceptional case.

I don't know maybe in getting the Israeli citizenship such proofs would be accepted, in addition to more valuable arguments such as genetic tests and Judaism. But In case of Russia it won't work for sure. You could invent the name of ancestor, you could have photoshoped his image or use other's ancestor photo ect. Finally, many people have distant Russian ancestry, if I'm not mistaken, even George Bush reportedly had a sort of very distant Russian ancestor (I'm sure he wasn't). Claims based on few percentage of genes is like a strange wish to get Neanderthal citizenship.

The Russian version of the name is probably Михаил Качанов

The traditional way to write that in English is "Michael Kachanoff", though a more technical/scientific transliteration is "Mikhail Kachanov"

Even if you manage to get , what is it worth going to place where you have less in common with people there than lets say in ethnic society where you live. It is good to search for ancestral lineage but I do not think you need to go that far.
