I was beaten as a kid. My father brought out his belt when I did something wrong. Sometimes any object he could find. My mother used to throw objects at me. My uncles used to beat me too. They got beaten when they were kids too. It was normal and part of the culture but I think my father sometimes took it too far, he would beat me for the slightest reason and really badly, it got to the point where I got scared of being around him and I remember I ran away from home.
We are friends now however. It is all forgotten. Live and let go.
But no, I wouldn't beat my children. I would dicipline them in a different way. If they were bad behaved or hyper I would take them to some boxing gym or martial arts school or wrestling, it really gives children a character. As a kid, since I was bad behaved and hyper I think thats what I needed exactly. When I did boxing/kickboxing, I just had this calm and inner peace inside of me that probably couldn't even be reached with meditation.
Children that don't obey shouldn't be beaten but rather disciplined by other means as the above.
A child should be disciplined very early on and develope good habits that they take with them on in later life.
