An aspect I admire in Umbanda, as Kardecism, is their focus in the spiritual evolution of the follower, than be a mere witchery, despite this is not my belief due I follow the concept of Eternal Return, what explain my inclination to religions like Judaism/Cabbala, Candomblé(s) and even Druidism and Asatru.

Umbanda is a Brazilian religion that blends African religions with Catholicism, Spiritism, and considerable indigenous lore. Umbanda is related to, and has many similarities with, other Afro-Brazilian religions like Candomblé and Quimbanda, but has its own identity.

Umbanda is ceremonial magick but with a Catholic flair; Quimbanda is a combo of ceremonial and practical sorcery but with an admixture of old European grimoire traditions and Indio methods (the spirits being tied to particular geographic characteristics like rivers and savannas). Palo Mayombe while not particularly common in Brazil is present and is similar to Quimbanda but even darker.

Umbanda is dressed as Catholicism (crudely, literally just replacing the names of greater spirits with the name of Catholic saints) and more focused on working with specific spirits (the drunk, the whore, the rapist, the murderer, etc.) which they inherited from incorporating Kardecism. The Catholic Church despises this religion, however.

Whereas Candomblé focuses on greater Nature Spirits and ancestor spirits, Umbanda chooses specifically to work with the lowest of the low of the spiritual world, almost all of the common invocations are echoes from the dregs of society. That's why so many of them end up losing their minds, they invite nothing but low energy trash from the other side.

Even the New Age western stuff like Kardecism is less harmful to the practitioner, because at least they either get some things right but don't actually practice anything powerful or focus on pointless or harmless things.

The Kardecists were too good for the forest, tribal, African entities, they started "channelling" all sorts of not so uppity entities, like whores, old black men, Indios and such. As an cult of ancestors, the caboclos are entities that come from an Indio background, the Pretos-velhos are related to negroes, and the eshus/pomba giras are related to pardos.

These faiths are not 'from' their sources as much as they are 'from' their local practitioners. The African diaspora is intensely syncretic and wherever it appears it seems to incorporate the local indigenous populations beliefs, traditional African beliefs, and beliefs from whichever foreign sources that location has had contact with.

The formula is the same whether in Chicago, New Orleans, Port-au-Prince or Săo Paulo. Let's also not forget that the infamous Tituba of Salem Witch Trials was a Caribbean slave and was very probably well versed in Afro-Diaspora magics.

I don't know correctly, but according I learnt, Umbanda is just a dissidence of Kardecism/Spiritism, due Umbanda embraces the content, spiritual entities and rituals of african and native religious practices, but the focus continues being the spiritural development/evolution of the follower, maybe a vestigial influence of karmic religions like buddhism and hinduism.

About Quibanda, the real meaning of this word is controversial. Some people say it corresponds to negative/devolutive aspect of Umbanda. While others say it is just the remnants of african sorceries in pure state.

If someone think I'm wrong, feel free to correct me, as I said this subject is very controversial, with possibility of to not exist a definitive answer for the questions.
