As for your idea he can pass for anything else that depends on where you are. He would not pass in some areas as nothing but atypical. Besides people aren't as stupid as you seem to think by generalizing Swedes. By the way duh about people giving little second-thought to Swedes, they aren't some purple people eating monster as between Germanics & Brits they're not that different looking to the average passer byer.

Most American Swedes, after all, ARE Americans despite their prior Sweden born ancestry. Your comment reminds me of a twitty colleague who is "Dutch" American but he knows less about the Netherlands than me, doesn't know any real Dutch traditions, and couldn't speak Dutch to save his life. He's American of Dutch ancestry & nothing more.

PS. Germans, Dutch, etc. look different? Where have you being living, under a rock? My father, who is British, can pass anywhere in Europe from England to Portugal over to the eastern side of Poland & often be confused as a local. I am oftentimes mistaken as Swedish or Dutch or other.
Gosh. Seems I struck a wrong cord with you. Didn't mean to. But maybe you're just naturally like this, or something in my ethnic or religious background causes you to itch.

You're right that most Americans have no clue what Roma means (it mostly means a type of tomato over here), and that Gypsy is the proper name for them here, and unlike similar terms in other languages (i.e. cigani), it has no derogatory or offensive connotations.

The Gypsy tears thing is a joke from Borat, so most Americans wouldn't bring it up.

If I met you, I'd be happy to finally meet a fellow Aprician in real life, but if I wasn't a member of this forum and you told me you were a Gypsy I wouldn't treat you any differently than a member of any other ethnic group I've had no real-life contact with.

Christian MENAs are fine and become good Americans. (i.e. Copts, Assyrians, Maronites)

I'm not a Christian so I have no loyalty to who is Christian or not ,I'd describe myself as a secularized Hindu.

Where my folks live in the Bay Area - Almaden Valley and Los Gatos - there are a lot of Assyrians but the males have behavioral traits I do not like. However, they are alright.

If they've seen Borat, they may make a reference to that. But most Americans haven't the slightest clue about ANY culture, let alone Romani. I don't think anyone would single you out either. At least not in my area, you'd fit in quite well ,(very diverse)
