8th century is a bit late for Avars. I thought they were already "extinct" at that time.

Maybe what we see here is one of the last groups.

Avars were hated by Göktürks. Göktürks insisted on calling Avars in Europe "Pseudo-Avars" and they claimed that real Avars bowed down to Göktürks. Avars were actually kind of a federation of tribes that opposed Göktürk rule and escaped from Göktürk lands.
