I wonder if those are really Avars or maybe Slavs or a mixed crowd of various ethnic groups.

The skeleton doesn't look very Mongoloid in my opinion. It's short-headed, but so are the most of Slavs of today, and the typical mongoloid traits are missing. I guess they would be pred. Slavic (or maybe Iranian?) genetically.
