Generally the length doesn't disturb me if it's a good story. Setting either, but the protagonist is a concern. I enjoy things that involve philosophy or characters that are undergoing some existential struggle for the first time.

Some favourites are The Stranger by Albert Camus, Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Hunger by Knut Hamsun. I read Hunger in an afternoon when I was at my girlfriends place it drove her nuts that I wouldn't put it down until I finished it.

You're definitely a reader who prefers literary fiction instead of commercial fiction.

Commercial fiction doesn't appeal to me either because there isn't much emphasis placed on character development.

I also miss those classic literary stories because the point of view was often in third-person omniscient, and I prefer it over the first-person narratives of contemporary fiction. When I read a story, I look for clues about the author in it. Author intrusion is very frowned-upon today, readers think it's manipulative, but hmph.

I prefer exotic settings, somewhere that takes me away from here. Another land. Another time period. An invented story world.
I prefer strong male protagonists. Classic heroes. Not antiheroes or dark protagonists.
I like philosophical tales too, with lots of deep metaphors.
Favorite genres: historical dramas, psychological dramas, sci-fi, fantasy war

Yeah Commercial Fiction/Genre Fiction has never been particularly interesting to me. There have been a few exceptions to the rule there, but generally I find the former more interesting.

I also enjoy Murakami, but I feel like most of his books are very similar. Also he seems to shoehorn sexual imagery where it's not necessarily needed. Although it is a common theme in his books in relation to his characters development.

Those are fantasy stories, myths have a specific structure and are pure metaphors. Fantasy takes their elves and dragons rather literally. Author intent and story structure are key differences.

I like myths too, though I think they're irresponsible. I also like the fantasy genre.
