Question Do you adhere to religion on a tribalistic, spiritual or philosphical basis?

I found it interesting that when it comes to religion in general; people adhere to religion for different reasons. Sometimes, something bad happened in their life, so they use religion as a spiritual/moral compass intrinsically because they genuinely believe in the values that is preached. While, for others, they simply do it for ethnic or cultural reasons because it was a part of their country's history; thus, they feel obligated to adhere superficially. That may or may not lack the spiritual aspect to why they believe in whatever religion in the first place. Whereas, for others, the philosophical basis stems from personal upbringing and experience; not necessarily the person's choosing that may or may not integrate both tribalistic and spiritual reasons.

Generally speaking, what are your reasons/rationale (or lack of belief for not following a religion) for following your religion?

We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”

I think faith and codes is a personal matter for the individual. I believe it requires a higher-end intelligence to have faith and spirituality - it does not take much intelligence to dismiss it and demand proof.

Is greco-Roman stoicism considered a religion? Some have compared it to Buddhism. ... I like shaolin Buddhist monks who will fuck you up if you cross them wrong.

Its true religions and philosophies are schools of human thought, but I would say their differences reside in the fact in how their manufactured and popularized in societies. Religion is merely a culturally produced version of philosophy grounded in anecdotal themes with moral undertones to it. Dogmatically past down centuries prior with tribal connotations to them. Philosophy is an enhanced version of religion grounded in logic with theoretical models attached to it.

Tribalistic and philosophical. Raised Methodist, converted to Episcopal due to family history and because I more closely identified with them.

Unlike some Pagans I have met, who only seem to follow their religion out of counter-culture against the dominant religion such as christianity or Islam or out of some vague idea of "my ancestors' religion", I legitimately believe in the Gods, the cosmology, the philosophy, and the values contained in Baltic Paganism. Though I am Lithuanian, I do not follow out of some feeling that I must follow the ethnic religion of my ancestors.
