That's hardly an architecture and have little to do with communists. Just mix of steel, concrete and sometimes bricks. Absolutely same around the globe. Only when carrying capacity was moved from walls on internal beams and concrete walls were replaced with glass the exterior of buildings was changed to more pleasant one. Remember which city was called concrete jungle?

yeah but you see a lot more of these types of utilitarian architectural styles in Communist countries because it goes along with the ideology.

Nothing to do with ideology. Russia had housing shortages in urban areas even before revolution. Soviet government tried to build enough rapidly during industrialization. But during WWII it all was left in ruins with entire cities leveled to the ground. China had massive housing shortages at the beginning of its industrialization too. These ugly blocks were the quickest solution to accommodate large numbers of people. It was unavoidable necessity wrapped in ideological package.

Apartment houses built in the time of Stalin (stalinka, сталинка) generally don't look bad. I wonder if it makes Stalin less communist than Khrushchev or something? Joke
