Iraq's Ministry of Transportation confirmed the "breakthrough for the return of relations between the two countries" in a statement from Minister Kazem Fangan al-Hamami.

Commercial air travel between the two countries was halted in 1990 after the Baathists' invasion of Saudi ally Kuwait.

The resumption comes after closer ties this year between Baghdad and Riyadh, including attempts to normalize relations. Jubeir had said Riyadh was prepared to resume air links from Riyadh to Baghdad and Najaf.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi visited Saudi King Salman in June.

The two countries will establish a joint coordination council within the week, the Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Wednesday.

The two states have also stated they plan to fully reopen the Arar border point beyond the yearly pilgrimage crossings.
