Fossilized Irish Giant Found in 1895

The fossilized Irish giant from 1895 is over 12 feet tall. The giant was discovered during a mining operation in Antrim, Ireland. This picture is courtesy "the British Strand magazine of December 1895" Height, 12 foot 2 inches; girth of chest, 6 foot 6 inches; length of arms 4 foot 6 inches. There are six toes on the right foot.

The six fingers and toes remind some people of Bible passage 2 Samuel 21:20 ”And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant”




This photo of the 'fossilized Irish giant' was taken at a London rail depot & appeared in the 12/1895 issue of Strand Mag. The giant was found by a Mr Dyer while looking for iron ore in County Antrim. It was 12' 2" (3.71 m) tall, weighed 2 tonnes & had 6 toes on its right foot. After a showing in Dublin, it came to liverpool & Manchester England, attracting all kinds. After a legal dispute over ownership, nothing more appears to have been heard or seen of the exhibit.

In 1895, a fossilized giant was apparently discovered in County Antrim, Ireland and shipped to London where it was photographed and the picture published in The Strand magazine. This giant was reportedly taller than the Cardiff Giant at over 12 feet. Somehow in spite of its size, the "Fossilized Irish Giant" managed to disappear shortly after this picture was taken.

Unfortunately, no scientist ever managed to examine this particular "fossil" before it was "lost." As a result, there are still those today who use the Irish Giant as clear and convincing evidence of the literal truth of Genesis 6:4 (Just do a web search on Fossilized Irish Giant.)

Three things to note:

Look at the similarities of pose between the proven fake Cardiff Giant and the mysteriously missing Irish Giant. Does this not suggest that someone copied PT Barnum's idea of copying the Cardiff Giant?
Does the perspective look right in this photograph? Is the "giant" really taller than that freight car in the background. Or is this a carefully selected camera angle to make a much smaller statue look immense? Is the photograph of the fake itself a fake?
The Strand was primarily a fiction magazine. It also published puzzles and brain-teasers.
And yet today there are still those who believe the Irish Giant was real.

There was a lot of faking going in the late 19th century. From photos of fairies to giants. It was a product of charlatans becoming aware of the relatively new power of photography.

Aha, so it was a fake. It does look rather strange in shape for a "fossil". I'd expect such a fossil to look more mummy-shaped, and not with perfect outlines of the body.

Anyway, despite hoaxes like this one, I do believe there were giants in ancient times, and there is other evidence which is more credible.
