    Default Race or Ethnicity?

Many times I have tried to gather information on the demographics of a certain city based on the ethnic make up of the city, not race. And many times I have failed because 99.8% of the time they only provide information on race, not ethnicity unless you're trying to find how many Vietnamese live there. I think race-based statistics should be done away and bring in ethnicity-based statistics. Race is far too monolithic a definition for a group of many peoples who are very diverse and different from each others. For instance, a Russian and an Englishman may be both white but do they hold any other common links other than being white? I don't think so.

In the U.S. they are divided between white, blacks, asians, latinos, and so on. This talk of ethnicity does not exist between the average American Joe, the majority, who doesn't attend 'racialist' or anthroboards.

That's true but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried.

That's not true at all. Statistics on the ethnic/ancestral breakdown of white populations in the US are kept and are extremely easy to come by. City Data provides this for even the smallest townships and boroughs. For example, my borough with has a population of 5,199 (pretty small), but City Data tells me that the the population is 96.1% white and among that the composition is:
    • German (34.8%)
    • Irish (14.8%)
    • English (12.6%)
    • Italian (11.3%)
    • United States (7.8%)
    • Polish (7.2%)

For the more generic ancestry, yes but other than that? No.

I meant the more common ones are easy to find like English or German but the less common ones like Serb, Bulgarian, Croatian, etc are harder to find.

Because there simply are not that many of them.

Well, duh. That's just because of the tiny numbers involved. Most statisticians aren't going to bother listing something that's 0.00005%; they'll just lump you guys in as "other."

And whose fault is that? The statisticians.
