Actually it is unknown what early R1a and R1b look a like. The only mention of them, people imagine them as indo-europeans, something similar to today Northern Indians . But in reallity, it is unknown what was original R haplogroup.
So when they (R1a,R1b) came in Europe, they were already a lot admixed (also with asiatics as well) and that result of ancient mixture with asiatics are today pinkish-white skin, or reddish-white.
User "Sunqvist" educated me on this area, and that have some logic.

The Yamnaya were the Proto-IE. People from the Pontic-Caspian steppe.
And Western Europeans have virtually no 'Asiatic' admixture if you mean the Mongloid race like the Chinese, Japanese, Buryats, etc.

he could be R1a, but just a directal mutation R1a-Z93. It's impossible for him that have mutation like Rethel have, for example.

Anyway, the original R1a carriers were white. The Indo-Iranians in the Volga-Ural region were obviously white.
