This is a very good drive by Mr Modi. It could revolutionize India. A cleaner India is a better India. But there's a lot f work to be done. 52 million toilets is a handful only for a population of 1 billion.

I am in China right now, while it is a lot cleaner than India, the huge population and the masses of peasants make it a nightmare to get around in train stations, major tourist sites, the bathrooms are fucking disgusting for one, and then you deal with the massive amount of loud obnoxious people all around you.

China had a normal population rate but then were encouraged to have as many kids as possible by Mao Zedong claiming that people are the most precious thing in the world. So if it weren't more him, the population rate wouldn't be so high (even though he killed millions of Chinese folk, I've heard that his statements resulted in an overall population boom). The restriction doesn't make sense anymore as China is gonna get the same problem as Europe and Japan if this continues (shortage of labor).

When was the last time you were in China before this one? Has the population changed dramatically or have people become wealthier and as a result produce more litter than in the past?

Relative to Mao Zedong, yes. The one child policy was clumsy though.

Also, queuing up for a ticket is nothing to do with democracy. That's more a Confucian ideal if anything but I agree it breaks down with overpopulation.
