Default Which of these scientists is the greatest? (Professor S. Hawking vs Einstein vs Sir Isaac Newton)

Which of these legendary great scientists has contributed the most to discovery?

    Professor Stephen Hawking (from England)

Stephen William Hawking, CH CBE FRS FRSA (8 January 1942) is an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He is a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Hawking is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the US. In 2002, Hawking was ranked number 25 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. He was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge between 1979 and 2009 and has achieved commercial success with works of popular science in which he discusses his own theories and cosmology in general; his book A Brief History of Time appeared on the British Sunday Times best-seller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks.

Professor Stephen Hawking recently warned the world that humans have just 200 years left to leave this planet and colonise space.
The physicist repeated his warning that the human race is doomed at the Starmus Festival celebrating science and the arts, which is held in Trondheim, Norway.

    Albert Einstein (from Germany)

Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist. Einstein developed the theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics (alongside quantum mechanics). 274 Einstein's work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science. Einstein is best known by the general public for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (which has been dubbed "the world's most famous equation"). He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect", a pivotal step in the evolution of quantum theory.

Near the beginning of his career, Einstein thought that Newtonian mechanics was no longer enough to reconcile the laws of classical mechanics with the laws of the electromagnetic field. This led him to develop his special theory of relativity during his time at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern (1902–1909), Switzerland. However, he realized that the principle of relativity could also be extended to gravitational fields and—with his subsequent theory of gravitation in 1916—he published a paper on general relativity. He continued to deal with problems of statistical mechanics and quantum theory, which led to his explanations of particle theory and the motion of molecules. He also investigated the thermal properties of light which laid the foundation of the photon theory of light. In 1917, Einstein applied the general theory of relativity to model the large-scale structure of the universe.

    Sir Isaac Newton (from England)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Newton

Sir Isaac Newton PRS (25 December 1642 – 20 March 1726/27) was an English mathematician, astronomer, theologian and physicist (described in his own day as a "natural philosopher") who is widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time and a key figure in the scientific revolution. His book Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica ("Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy"), first published in 1687, laid the foundations of classical mechanics. Newton also made pathbreaking contributions to optics, and he shares credit with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz for developing the infinitesimal calculus.

Newton's Principia formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation that dominated scientists' view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. By deriving Kepler's laws of planetary motion from his mathematical description of gravity, and using the same principles to account for the trajectories of comets, the tides, the precession of the equinoxes, and other phenomena, Newton removed the last doubts about the validity of the heliocentric model of the Solar System and demonstrated that the motion of objects on Earth and of celestial bodies could be accounted for by the same principles. Newton's theoretical prediction that the Earth is shaped as an oblate spheroid was later vindicated by the geodetic measurements of Maupertuis, La Condamine, and others, thus convincing most Continental European scientists of the superiority of Newtonian mechanics over the earlier system of Descartes.

It is debatable. Einstein is often voted as the greatest one and no other scientist had life like he had. However it is slightly more reasonable in my opinion to consider Newton as the GOAT.
It is really hard to say. Top 3 or 5 is a bit easier to name and usually includes Newton, Einstein and Maxwell http://physicsdatabase.com/2013/02/2...est-physicist/
They are extraordinary scientists. Here is a great video btw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2cVLHozb9k

Newton, although Einstein called Newton's era "the happy childhood of science" and overturned some of Newton's classical physics : Newton invented calculus. You can't even formulate Einstein's theory of relativity without calculus. Therefore, Newton wins by default.

Newton and probably Maxwell were better at math than Einstein and math is the Queen of the sciences. Einstein tried to come up with the unified field theory or theory of everything using mathematics and not only did he fail but made no significant mathematical theorems nor a new branch of mathematics.

BTW, I really do think Newton invented calculus and that Leibniz used chicanery to get more of the credit he deserves. The only credit Leibniz deserves is we ended up using his notation over Newton's in calculus. Newton's notation was called a fluxion_ and it worked just not as elegantly as Leibniz's notation.

What exactly would "greatest" mean in this context? Smartest? Most influential? If the latter, than I'd say Newton. In any scientific database, there are more references to Newton and his laws than to anyone else. He aswell invented the branch of mathematics, which arguably has the greatest influence on technological development out of all the modern mathematics.

Hawking is wheelchair bound, communicates through google translate voice, he is therefore inferior to the two others.

Stephen Hawking is overrated in the same manner that Michio Kaku is. People who watch TV probably think he’s one of the best living physicists even though he isn’t.

Just like Michio Kaku, Stephen Hawking is a media figure. Other physicists like Steven Weinberg and Ed Witten are completely ignored in the media.

Just as with Michio Kaku there’s probably no working physicist who considers him to be the best physicist or even close even though the media portrays him to be the best physicist.

People who watch TV probably think Michio Kaku is one of the greatest living physicists, but physicists don’t. There’s probably not even one physicist who would rank Michio Kaku within the top 50 or even the top 100 best living physicists.

Michio Kaku has made some contributions, but he still isn’t even close to being one of the best physicists in modern times.

Michio Kaku is more of a media figure who writes on popular science and appears on radio and TV shows a lot.

Other physicists who are regarded as the best living physicist like Edward Witten are virtually ignored in the media.

I have seen scholars estimate Einstein's IQ at 160 and Newton's at 190 and while these estimates are never as accurate as actual IQ tests they do give us a good relative feel for who was more influential/smarter.
