For unarmed combat ...
I would suggest a combination of the below ...
1) Brazillian Ju Jitsu , a no gi style like Eddie Bravo's style probably better for the street.Chokes and effective grappling techniques can overcome a bigger opponent if performed with good technique
2) Krav Maga, look for a good instructor preferably someone from Israel. Knowing how to quickly and effectively seriously maim an attacker/opponent is very useful skill for self defense
3) Kickboxing or Thai boxing or Tae Kwon Do,or western boxing, the ability to both kick and punch/strike and elbows can be very useful in any combat situation . as well as being able to defensivley slip punches, duck and weave , block and develop good footwork all intrinsic components of unarmed combat
some might say to simply do mma , that would help but I think it focuses more on a competition situation,
styles like ju jitsu and krav maga can be very street defense specific and having some striking/kicking skills as well, thats why i suggest the above styles.

If you're in Finland or in Orange County, California where I'm from, this is a good list of options. But if you live in the urban streets of America around dangerous street thugs and gangbangers, I'd stick to only three things:
boxing/military krav maga, a .44 special revolver and 9mm Walther.

Thats why I said for Unarmed combat.
Ju Jitsu and Krav Maga can work in confined spaces , long as u have enough room to pull off a choke or punch your opponent in the throat your good.
Krav maga has lots of nasty moves that can be used in confined spaces as well as how to utilise everday objects like a pen or even a chuppa chop stick as weapons.
Boxing is always good but being able to kick and punch is even better.
Of course weapons trump umarmed combat , so yeh 1)Handgun or 2)Taser or 3)Knife.
If using a knife better know what your doing though.

BJJ, Boxing, Systema, Thai Boxing. Train atleast boxing and bjj. Boxing gets you really battle tested and ready, then add muay thai for the knees and elbows and kicks. Systema is like krav maga and a self defense system. Also train Judo.
Everything you can basically that works for optimal survival.

Probably MMA since it's a mix of martial arts which makes it effective as it has the best of both worlds basically(Stand up and groundwork)

The Albanians, these tigers of mountain wars ... have as their religion rebellion. Even their worst warrior is one of the strongest and bravest on the battle-field, just as if he was a knight on the legendary horse. But he has no horse, nor proper weapons for battle. Instead of the horse, he has a lance which strikes as lightning, he has spears who's points are full of posion as the sting of hornets, he has also a wooden bow with some arrows. Furthermore, he is stronger than iron ...

I have trained Wadō-ryū karate and Hokutoryu jiujitsu. If I would need to choose one of those (and thinking self-defense only)....I would pick of the latter one.
But I love karate

Tasers are good weapons but if the perp is on PCP or other psychoactive drugs it won't be as effective.
I know many that have tasers and stun guns. (as well as handguns) I don't know anyone that carries a knife, it requires more training and a particular psychology/mindset.
And yes I agree. Boxing and non civilian krav maga are the best for self defense.
