From what I understand most German Americans are from South Germany (Bavaria or Swabians).

But Germans and Scandies at one time were not considered as desirable as people from the British Isles (Anglos, Scots-Irish, etc)

Most of those came here in the 1800s or 1900s.

The Germans who came here before the revolution were almost entirely West German. (They're usually called "Pennsylvania Dutch")

At one point, Italians, Spaniards, Jews, Poles and basically anybody who is not Anglo and not Germanic was not considered White, and therefore not American.

A lot of things which are believed to be American like Cowboy culture actually originated from non-White people. For example cowboy culture was originally created by the Arabian Bedouin tribes that invaded Spain. This sub-culture then gets imported into Mexico, where the Agal(head) ring and scarf change into the proto-cowboy hat, and then eventually White Americans adopt this sub-culture from the Mexicans, and it spread into Canada north and to South in Argentina. The name Gaucho actually in Arabic comes Wahsho which means Wild or people of the wilderness, which where the term Bedouin comes from in Arabic from Badyah. Thus the most authentic American sub-culture has Arabian and Mexican roots.
