In the world there are 337 breeds recognized by the International Cynologique Federation (FCI), each one property of a specific country. Of these, 21 are Spanish native, recognized by the Real Sociedad Canina de Spain (RSCE).
Some of them:
ALANO ESPAÑOL (SPANISH BULLDOG). These dogs traveled with Spanish explorers and were used as war dogs in the conquest of America. Currently used for hunting and as guardian of cattle, farms and properties.
Weight: 30-40 kg. Height: 58-63 cm.
PERRO DE PRESA MALLORQUÍN, OR CA DE BOU (MAJORCA CATCH DOG). Its origin goes back to the year 1229 with the arrival to Balearic Islands of Spanish catch dogs by Jaime I of Aragon, although it is not started to be called Ca De Bou until centuries later. Officially, since 1964, according to the FCI is called Perro de Presa Mallorquín.
Weight: 35-38 kg. Height: 55-58 cm.
PERRO DE PRESA CANARIO (CANARIAN CATCH DOG). In addition to the traditional role of cattledog, have been used for dogfighting. Until the 1950s it remained common practice in all the islands. The fights were banned in the mid-1940s, but lasted for another decade. From this moment, due to tightening by the Francoist authority for the eradication of dogfighting, the Presa Canario is relegated to counted breeders that fortunately kept the breed preventing its total disappearance.
Weight:50-59 kg. Height: 60-65 cm.
MASTÍN ESPAÑOL (SPANISH MASTIFF). The Spanish race par excellence and one that has greater promotion and number of specimens is the Spanish Mastiff, the classic dog for the transhumances in Spain. Needed to protect the flock from wolves in the displacements in the Castilian-Leonese area.
Weight: 80-100 kg. Height: 77-88 cm.
MASTÍN DEL PIRINEO (PIRENEAN MASTIFF). Physically similar to the Spanish Mastiff, but has longer hair because of the lower temperatures. In terms of his character, "it is an animal that is sure of itself, serious, but non-aggressive. Never away from the sheep though the wolves cause them".
Weight: 60-80 kg. Height: 77-82 cm.
PERDIGUERO DE BURGOS (BURGOS POINTER). Focused on the partridge and quail hunting, "is prized by hunters who want a hard dog in any terrain and type of hunting, rustic, obedient, strong and above all excellent method of hunting", explained from the Costa del Sol Canine society. Weight: 25-30 kg. Height: 59-67 cm.
PASTOR MALLORQUÍN (MAJORCA SHEPERD DOG). Of courageous and brave character, was used in bullfighting spectacles, fighting bulls.
Used traditionally in the Mallorcan countryside as guardian of flocks, is basically a sheperd dog, but its intelligence and loyalty allows him to develop tasks of surveillance and/or defense.
Weight: 35-40 kg. Height: 66-73 cm.
PASTOR VASCO (BASQUE SHEPERD DOG). Traditionally used by the local shepherds to help them take care of their cattle and sheep.
Weight: 18-33 kg. Height: 47-63 cm.
PASTOR CATALÁN (CATALAN SHEEPDOG). It is in the care of the flocks where shown its true essence, because not only does what the pastor orders him but that in many cases it is able to make own decisions.
Weight: 16-18 kg. Height: 45-55 cm.
GALGO ESPAÑOL (SPANISH GREYHOUND). If there is a fast dog in our territory that is the Spanish Greyhound. Originally from Castilla and Northern Andalusia, pursues its prey to the race. "Their long tail helps them in the direction changes and its slender body makes them more aerodynamic". It is a pure breed, i.e. that its characteristics have been by selection through the centuries and not crossing of other races. The Spanish Greyhounds are big runners dogs that can reach 70 km/h.
Weight: 25-30 kg. Heigh: 62-70 cm.
PODENCO IBICENCO (IBIZAN HOUND). This dog has characteristics very recognizable and unique in the world: long legs, slim body and pointed ears, which operate as antennas. Agile and cunning, used especially in rabbit hunting, making use especially of the view and hearing.
Weight: 20-30 kg. Height: 66-72 cm.
PODENCO ANDALUZ (ANDALUSIAN HOUND). Andalusian Podencos, like other hounds, have excellent sight, hearing and smell, which makes them good hunters, often employed for hunting rabbits. Andalusians and mastiffs form the heart of the rehalas (teams of 20 to 24 hunting dogs) of central and southern parts of the Iberian Peninsula; medium and smaller dogs search out deer or wild boar, whilst the larger hounds are used for attacking the prey.
Weight: 27-30 kg. Height: 54-64 cm.
PODENCO CANARIO (CANARIAN HOUND). Of similar morphology, this last podenco is strongly adapted to hunting in volcanic field.
Weight: 16-22 kg. Height: 53-64 cm.
PERRO DE AGUA ESPAÑOL (SPANISH WATER DOG). Native of Andalusia, although there is also a niche in Cantabria, is one of the breeds most popular and most versatile in the world, as useful as hunting dog as pastor. But what is surprising is his mastery of the water as a fisherman. It is a specie with a high intelligence.
Weight: 18-22 kg. Height: 42-52 cm.
RATONERO BODEGUERO ANDALUZ (ANDALUSIAN WINE-CELLAR RAT HUNTING DOG). Originally from Cadiz, where a lineage was formed in wineries and country houses. "Surely the English brought a variety of their terriers, crossed with local dogs, they produced this race," explains from the society.
Weight: 8 kg. Height: 35-43 cm.
SABUESO ESPAÑOL (SPANISH SCENTHOUND): Its origin is the far north of Iberian Peninsula, where has been used in this mountainous region since hundreds of years ago for all kind of game: wild boar, hare, brown bear, wolf, red deer, fox, roe deer and chamois. It is an exclusive working breed, employed in hunting with firearms.
